As the name suggest MLD is a treatment that focuses on the enhancement of the lymphatic system, which is a body wide system of lymph, lymph nodes and vessels. It works alongside the circulatory system to keep our bodies immune system functioning, removing toxins and other particules from our bodies and helping to maintain a healthy balance overall.
It can used to minimise puffiness & fluid retention, improve the immune system, and help with issues such as sinusitis.
Although I think of MLD as a treatment and not a massage as such, it's a very relaxing treatment to receive.
You, the client, will be on a massage couch and covered with towels. The sequence is always that we start with the lymph nodes around the neck area and from there we can work around specific parts of the body, as directed by your needs.
The treatment consists of very slow, rhythmic movements on specific areas of the body, these are light & gentle but very effective movements. We do not use the long gliding techniques of Swedish massage that you may be used to.
Due to the nature of this treatment you can expect to feel some tiredness or fatique the next day, if you also been suffering from colds, sore throat then these symptoms may be made temporarily worse before they get better.
MLD is suitable for almost everyone! This technique can be incorporated into a routine massage or used solely on it's own.
Due to the unique properties of this massage, it's particularly beneficial for anyone who experiences long term chronic conditions such as ME, CFS, as well as fibromyalagia. Due to the nature of these conditions a full hours treatment would not be recommended in the initial period but would benefit from shorter periods of treatment, approx 20-30 mins or so.
Those who have had sprains, strains and fractures would benefit from a reduction in inflammation and pain.
People recoving from operations of all kinds benefit from MLD, and especially those who have had breast surgery...however, if that surgery is as a result of breast cancer then, please note, that only massage therapists who are trained in Oncology massage should be offering massage in this instance. (Unfortunately, I am not, however, I will happily locate a practitioner for you who is). However, for those who had non-cancerous surgery, then, this is a suitable treatment.
Unfortunately in some cases it's just not safe to perform MLD as this treatment can raise the cardiovascular load.
Those living with the following conditions cannot receive MLD
